SMC — Senior Mathematical Challenge (UKMT)

What it is. UKMT's entry-level senior maths competition, for students in Year 13 and below. It's olympiad-style — syllabus-light, rewards reasoning and ingenuity, and needs no calculus. So it measures raw aptitude, not curriculum. It is not an admissions test, but it's the cheapest, fastest way to gauge mathematical potential. Cohort caveat: entrants are self-selected and strong (keen maths students), so you're compared against a strong field.

Format & rules

  • 25 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes.
  • No calculator.
  • Marking: start at 25 marks; +4 per correct; −1 per wrong; blanks score 0 → maximum 125.
  • The −1 penalty means don't blind-guess — only answer if you can solve it or eliminate options. (This is the only test here with negative marking.)

How to sit it (mock protocol)

  1. Print/open a past SMC paper; have the solutions ready but hidden.
  2. 90-minute timer, no calculator, no notes, nothing looked up. Pen + blank paper for working.
  3. Answer the questions in order; leave (don't guess) anything you can't eliminate, because wrong answers cost −1.
  4. Stop at 90 minutes and mark against the key.

How to score & interpret

  • Compute the mark: 25 + 4×(correct) − 1×(wrong).
  • Compare to that year's certificate boundaries (2025: Bronze 46 · Silver 57 · Gold 72; Senior Kangaroo 72; BMO1 ~104).
  • Rough percentile: certificates go to the top ~66% in gold:silver:bronze = 1:2:3, so Gold ≈ top 11%, Silver ≈ top 11–33%, Bronze ≈ top 33–66% of the (strong) field.
  • Interpretation: a good SMC is an encouraging aptitude signal — but it does not measure the calculus/algebra content the admissions tests need, and a strong SMC does not predict TMUA/STEP. Treat it as "is the mind sharp," then move to TMUA for the admissions-level read.
