A typical timeline: a preparatory year (a foundation year or A-levels) → BSc start the following September. Note that A-levels are the more universal qualification — accepted by the continental universities and by Imperial directly — whereas a UK foundation year is UK-only and is not accepted by TU Delft.

Foundation-year routes (UK)

The genuinely open routes for a September-2026 foundation start.

UCL Foundation Year — UPCSE — deadline 8 Jul 2026 (closes earlier if full). Required: 500-word personal statement · academic reference · certified transcripts · interview · IELTS · £130 fee + £2,750 deposit (tuition ~£28,000). Imperial-accepted at 80%.

Warwick IFP (Science & Engineering / Maths & Stats) — deadline 10 Aug 2026 (extended-with-English 29 Jun 2026). Required: personal statement · school transcript · IELTS UKVI 5.5 · no interview · £75 fee + £2,000 deposit (tuition £27,150). The lowest-friction option; Imperial-accepted at ≥80%.

Post-foundation targets (UCAS, 2027 entry)

Reached after a foundation, via UCAS:

  • Imperial — BSc Mathematics: no foundation of its own (only Warwick IFP / UCL UPCSE accepted). UCAS 13 Jan 2027 + TMUA (book Oct 2026 / Jan 2027). The TMUA is the hard gate — a reach.
  • Edinburgh — BSc/MA Mathematics: UCAS ~14 Jan 2027; no admissions test; IELTS 6.5. More attainable; confirm it accepts the chosen foundation.

Continental options — 2027 entry

For a September 2027 start, the relevant cycle opens in autumn 2026 / early 2027 (the closed 2026-entry windows are not the relevant ones).

  • École Polytechnique — Bachelor of Science (English): accepts a Russian attestat directly — no A-levels or foundation needed. For 2027 entry, apply in the rounds running ~Sept 2026 – Feb 2027 (earlier rounds favoured; 2027 dates not yet published — extrapolated from 2026). Required: transcripts · personal statement · CV · 2 referees · English C1 · ~50-min remote interview · €95. Extremely selective and maths-heavy — the qualification is the easy part; competitiveness (a strong maths record) is the real constraint.
  • TU Delft — BSc Computer Science & Engineering (English): a Russian attestat alone is not sufficient (it wants full A-levels or ≥60 ECTS of university study — a foundation year does not count). But A-levels unlock it. With A-levels (Maths required; Physics not needed for CSE), apply for 2027 entry: numerus fixus, Studielink deadline 15 Jan 2027, on predicted grades (selection ranking ~15 Apr 2027), with final results submitted by 1 Sep 2027 — so a 1-year A-level in 2026/27 is timing-compatible. Fallback routes

  • Pathway-provider foundations — rolling intakes, lower IELTS (~5.5), no STEP/TMUA, guaranteed/conditional progression:
  • Study Group → University of Bath ISC — the route to Bath. Note: the ISC progresses to Engineering / Science / Computing, not a standalone Maths BSc — verify a maths-degree progression.
  • Kaplan → Bristol, Nottingham, York, Glasgow… · INTO → Newcastle, Manchester, Exeter… · ONCAMPUS → UCL + others · NCUK → 100+ universities.
  • CATS Cambridge UFP — generally declined. Same UFP product as Bosworth / Worthgate / Guildhouse; below the threshold used here, and Imperial does not accept it. See the analysis under Foundation Years.

German-language route (2027+, German C1 required)

A different, demanding track — German to C1 plus an entrance exam or a Studienkolleg; earliest realistic start 2027.

Key distinction [2026-05-26]: a German Studienkolleg Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) is the right qualification for German universities — but it does not unlock ETH Zürich.

  • ETH Zürich — BSc Mathematics (German-taught): ETH judges by the school-leaving certificate, which here is the Russian attestat → it always triggers ETH's own entrance examination (reduced if combined with a Russian university place; otherwise comprehensive). A German FSP is not on ETH's recognised list and would not waive that exam; and FSP-German is not on ETH's accepted C1 list. [2026-05-26] A-levels don't fix this either: ETH's rule says A-levels taken in conjunction with another secondary credential (e.g. a completed attestat) require the Comprehensive Entrance Examination (8 subjects, in German) — so adding 1-year A-levels would not make an attestat-holder exam-free, and that exam runs in January 2027 (register Sept–Oct 2026), before A-level results. With German C1 a hard separate gate (~spring deadline), ETH is not a realistic 2027 route — it's a longer, German-immersion path. Famously high first-year attrition. [confirm with ETH Admissions]
  • TU Munich (TUM) — BSc Mathematics (German-taught): here the FSP is the route — a passed T-Kurs FSP is the recognised German university-entrance qualification and counts as German proof (DSH-2). A Russian attestat otherwise needs Studienkolleg + FSP. BSc window 15 May–15 Jul; aptitude assessment (motivation + maths essay); German C1.

On the FSP itself: it can be sat as an external candidate (without completing a Studienkolleg) in several states (NRW/Cologne, Hesse/Darmstadt & Frankfurt, Lower Saxony/Hannover, Saxony/Leipzig, Hamburg), ~twice a year (winter Dec–Jan, summer May–Jul; register ~3–4 months ahead; fees ~€200–550; NRW accepts B2 German). Caveats: external pass rates are low (~20%) and most states require C1 German already to register.

Open questions worth confirming with admissions

  1. Imperial (maths.admissions@imperial.ac.uk) — historical foundation→BSc-Maths grade thresholds + intake-route breakdown. Relevant to whether Imperial is reachable.
  2. UCL UPC — UPCSE → UCL BSc Maths actual progression rate (not the bundled 82%).
  3. Warwick IFP — IFP → Warwick BSc Maths conversion; proportion clearing 85% + STEP.
  4. École Polytechnique — whether an attestat without prior calculus is competitive (2027 round).
  5. Edinburgh — confirm it accepts Warwick IFP / UCL UPCSE for BSc Mathematics.
  6. ETH / TUM — confirm the exact entrance-exam / Studienkolleg requirement for a Russian attestat (case-by-case).
