The headline

Strong math department + exceptional city + warm community + 4-year MMath structural depth. Slightly weaker than expected on undergraduate experience due to large class sizes and front-loaded teaching satisfaction issues in Years 1-2.

Department

QS Mathematics 2026: top-50. Complete University Guide 2026 UK Math: #15 (Edinburgh fell behind Bristol this cycle).1 Research strong in probability, algebra, number theory.

The 4-year MA Mathematics or 5-year MMath is materially deeper than a 3-year English BSc. Year 5 MMath adds Master's-level (Level 11) work including a substantial project.2

Practitioner reputation

Real depth in Years 3-5; weaker satisfaction in Years 1-2:

"Great student support team. Year 4 is the best, early years teaching not as good."3 — StudentCrowd Edinburgh Math BSc, August 2023 (current student)

"Third year maths has definitely been a step up both in terms of the complexity of the work and the workload… I've really enjoyed third year so far… it has definitely been rewarding."4 — Fionnuala, Edinburgh Blogarithms blog, 3rd-year BSc Maths & Statistics, December 2021 (named author)

The red flag: Edinburgh's NSS satisfaction is reportedly 117/123 UK universities (cited via StudentCrowd summary). Not visible in QS/THE/CUG (which weight research output). Possibly university-wide rather than math-specific — worth verifying.

Cohort and community

Large international cohort. Edinburgh city is one of the best UK student-life experiences. Less of a tight-knit-cohort feel than Warwick (campus) or Durham (collegiate). MathPALS peer-assisted learning sessions try to compensate for class size.5

Accessibility

Edinburgh accepts UCL UPC and Warwick IFP via UCAS post-foundation; also accepts NCUK IFY for direct entry. Russian attestat alone is not sufficient.
