Comparison

Working multi-axis comparison. Headers in the table are sortable — click to sort by any axis. For the global academic ranking sources behind the math column, see Objective rankings (global). For the practitioner texture behind the math scores, see Math-axis deep dive. To choose by research-group fit and a potential mentor rather than by rank, see Research groups & mentors.

Axes

Axis What it measures
Math Pure-math depth + applied math + statistics + research culture + postgrad progression — working score, not pure ranking
QS Math Objective: QS Mathematics 2026 global subject rank — single most-cited source
Employ Graduate employment broadly, with quant/tech firms as a subset
Loc/Amb Place + community + ease of forming friendships
Workload NEW 2026-05-22. Higher = more manageable / sustainable. Lower = punishing 24/7 grind. Captures whether a programme offers high math + strong peers without a burnout-inducing pace
Prestige Global brand recognition

Accessibility tiers: not realistic / dropped, Low, Medium, High.

Scores are working judgement on 0.5-point granularity. Workload axis is tentative — needs verification with current-student outreach.

* École Polytechnique tentative pending math-prerequisite verification for attestat-only applicants. QS Math 2026 figures are global subject ranks where available; "n/a" means university doesn't make the QS Math top-300 or is stats-ranked separately. See Objective rankings (global) for source detail.

Realistic short list — tiered

Aspirational

These are the ceiling — reachable in theory only, accept no formal guarantees:

  • Imperial — Math 5.0, top-10 globally. [2026-05-26] Reportedly now the strongest UK maths and best for employability ("like Moscow State Mechmat in its better days"). Reachable via Warwick IFP or UCL UPCSE at competitive grades; no published thresholds. Workload 2.0 — intense, and the hardest to reach.
  • ETH Zürich — Math 5.0, world-top (Fields Medallist Alessio Figalli). [2026-05-26] Elevated per a well-connected source: easy to enter but ~50% culled after year 1; the barrier is German (early years are German-taught). A demanding, different track — and the natural exchange target from the TU Delft CS route. See Research groups & mentors.
  • École Polytechnique — Math ~4.5, English-taught 3-year Bachelor in Paris. Direct entry from school in theory; whether attestat-without-calculus is competitive is the open question.

Primary (math-strong, accessible)

  • Warwick — Math 4.5, accessible via Warwick IFP. Caveat: Warwick maths is widely reported as harsh — "ruthless toward students," "for the dedicated mathematicians who are prepared to work all the time." Workload 2.0. Strong on math depth and quant pipeline; weak on workload-sustainability. The harsh-culture flag is real. [2026-05-26] Softer read: isolation maybe overstated; cheaper accommodation; the hardcore, structured environment could suit a focused student — a strong, realistic option.

Strong alternatives (math-good, accessible, better workload feel)

  • Edinburgh — Math 4.0, Workload 3.5, exceptional city. 4-year MMath structural depth. NSS satisfaction concern (university-wide).
  • St Andrews — Math 4.0, Workload 4.0, best community feel. Guardian #1 UK math 2026.
  • Durham — Math 4.0, Workload 3.5, collegiate experience, strong pastoral. Cohort 39.1% private-school. London-internship friction moderate.
  • Bristol — Math 4.0, Workload 3.5, growing brand, CUG #6 UK math.

Reassessed → route, not destination

  • UCL — Math 3.5 (downgraded after the 2026-05-22 review), and further weakened [2026-05-25] by reliable-source reports of commercialisation / online teaching / perceived decline. Workload 3.0. The strength of UCL UPC as a foundation year is its main draw — combined with UCAS portability and London life. UCL Math BSc itself reads better as a route than a destination: UPC is a foundation step, not an endpoint. [2026-05-26] Now further: over-enrolment → frequent remote lectures and a cohort of strangers (same source).

Further options (kept in scope, not primary)

  • Bath — Math 3.5 (applied-leaning). Workload 3.5, strong placement-year integration.
  • Manchester — Math 3.5, largest UK math department, brand carries.
  • TU Delft — applied math + NL quant pipeline, but no English-taught maths BSc (the maths BSc is Dutch-only). English route is CS & Engineering + maths electives — a creative CS path, not a maths degree. [Corrected 2026-05-25.]
  • Trinity College Dublin — Math 3.5, Irish English-speaking, pleasant campus.

Off the table

  • Oxbridge — the pure-math apex and (Cambridge/Trinity) the olympiad-talent magnet, but realistic only via a deferred multi-year preparation route.
  • LSE — dropped 2026-05-22: pure-math weak under a pure-math priority.
  • KCL — dropped 2026-05-22: math department weak; Guardian #50 UK math 2026.

How to read this

One way to weight these axes:

  1. Brain development through deep pure math → Math axis dominates.
  2. Workload sustainability / well-being → NEW axis; weighted against extremes.
  3. Prestige and brand → Prestige axis.
  4. Enjoyable community → Loc/Amb axis.

On this weighting, Math is the leading filter; Workload is the secondary tie-breaker; Prestige and Loc/Amb arbitrate the rest.

What this view does NOT do

  • It doesn't produce a composite score. Weighting axes mechanically would obscure the genuine trade-offs between them.
  • It doesn't capture per-programme variation inside a university (e.g., LSE Maths & Stats ≠ LSE Pure Maths).
  • It doesn't address cost; see per-university and per-foundation pages.
  • The Workload axis is tentative. Most scores are inferred from forum reports + institutional FAQ language about contact hours. Needs verification with current-student outreach during open-day visits.
