Objective rankings (global)¶
Third-party global rankings, no UK-only tables. Commentary in the rightmost column. For this multi-axis comparison, see Comparison. Rankings are necessary but not sufficient — to choose by department research-group fit and a potential mentor, see Research groups & mentors.

| ~95 | Trinity College Dublin | 🟦 In further-options. |
| ~100 | Technion | 🟦 In further-options. |
| ~130 | Durham | 🟦 In scope; outscores its QS Math rank per the math-axis deep dive. |
| ~130 | UvA (Amsterdam) | ⬜ UvA BSc Mathematics is Dutch-taught; English option is Econometrics. |
| ~140 | Hebrew University Jerusalem | 🟦 In further-options. |

QS World 2026 — overall ranking (global)¶
Published 18 June 2025. 1,501 universities ranked.
| Rank | University | Family note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | MIT | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 2 | Imperial College London | 🟦 Tier-1 prestige ceiling. |
| 3 | Stanford | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 4 | Oxford | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 5 | Harvard | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 6 | Cambridge | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 7 | ETH Zürich | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 9 | UCL | 🟦 Top-10 brand globally — but the math department doesn't match the overall brand position. |
| 10 | Caltech | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 13 | University of Chicago | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 34 | Edinburgh | 🟦 In scope. |
| 35 | Manchester | 🟦 In further-options. |
| 47 | TU Delft | 🟦 In further-options. |
| 51 | Bristol | 🟦 In scope. |
| 53 | UvA | 🟦 In further-options (Econometrics, not pure math). |
| 74 | Warwick | 🟦 Primary application. The math-axis discrepancy is the real story — Warwick math is COWI-tier even though QS World places Warwick mid-tier. |
| 75 | Trinity College Dublin | 🟦 In further-options. |
| 79 | Glasgow | ⬜ Not in scope. |
| 94 | Durham | 🟦 In scope. |
| ~113 | St Andrews | 🟦 In scope. |
| ~130 | Bath | 🟦 In further-options. |
Notable: Warwick's overall QS World rank (#74) sits below its math-department reputation — a recurring theme. The math department punches above the institution's overall position.

THE methodology weights teaching (29.5%), research environment (29%), research quality (30%), industry (4%), international outlook (7.5%). Per the math-subject ranking, THE bundles Mathematics into "Physical Sciences" — not a clean math-specific signal. Source: timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings3.
ARWU 2025 — Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking)¶
Published 15 August 2025. Heavy weight on objective research metrics — Nobel laureates, Fields medallists, Highly Cited Researchers, papers in Nature / Science, citation counts. Most "academic" of the major global rankings; commercial reputation surveys excluded.
| Rank | University | Family note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Harvard | ⬜ Out of scope (23rd consecutive year at #1). |
| 2 | Stanford | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 3 | MIT | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 4 | Cambridge | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 5 | UC Berkeley | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 6 | Oxford | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 7 | Princeton | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 8 | Columbia | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 9 | Caltech | ⬜ Out of scope. |
| 10 | Chicago | ⬜ Out of scope. |

| 51-75 band | Manchester | 🟦 In further-options. |
| 51-75 band | Bristol | 🟦 In scope. |
| 101-150 band | Warwick | 🟦 ARWU under-rates Warwick math — Warwick is research-strong but ARWU's metric set (Nobels, HCR across all subjects) doesn't capture math-specific strength well. |
| 101-150 band | Durham | 🟦 In scope. |
ARWU GRAS 2025 — Mathematics-specific (published Nov 2025) detail is paywalled in the secondary press. From methodology + what's publicly confirmed:
- Princeton, Sorbonne / Paris-Saclay, MIT, Stanford, NYU (Courant), Harvard dominate the very top.
- Cambridge, Oxford, ETH Zürich, UCLA, Berkeley sit in positions 8-20.
- In the UK, Cambridge and Oxford are the only universities reliably in ARWU Maths top-20.
- Imperial and Warwick appear in the 30-50 band.
- Edinburgh / UCL / Bristol / Manchester typically appear in the 51-100 band.

US News Best Global Universities — Mathematics 2025-26¶
US News publishes a Math-specific global ranking. Methodology weights regional + global reputation, publications, normalized citation impact.
Top of the table tends to align with QS Math. UK-side: Oxford / Cambridge top-10; Imperial / Warwick / UCL in the 20-50 band. Source: usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/mathematics5.
Ranking sources deliberately excluded¶
- THE Impact Rankings — measures alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals. Not relevant to undergraduate math choice.
- QS Sustainability Ranking — same problem.
- Any ESG / social impact / diversity index — not the variable being optimised here.
- Domestic UK tables for non-UK universities — UK-domestic measures aren't applied to École Polytechnique or TU Delft.
Only academic-reputation + research-output + employer-reputation + math-subject-specific sources are used.
Ranking sources kept with caveats¶
- Complete University Guide UK Math — UK-domestic only, useful as a triangulation point for UK schools' undergraduate teaching quality. UCL #10, Warwick #5, Bristol #6, Bath #7, Durham #9, St Andrews #3 all flagged in the math-axis deep dive.
- Guardian University Guide UK Math — heavy on student satisfaction; St Andrews #1 in 2026 (dethroned Oxford). Useful as a student-experience signal, less as an academic-rigor signal.
