A-levels & fast-track options¶
Because A-levels are the universal key — accepted by the continental universities and by Imperial directly, whereas a UK foundation year is UK-only (and TU Delft rejects it; see Admissions) — the how of doing A-levels matters. This page maps the routes: tutorial colleges, online/home study, and the private-tutor route, plus where Olympiads fit.
The crux: Maths + Further Maths in one year is the hard part¶
Every credible provider gates Further Maths behind A-level Maths — you complete (or are taking) full A-level Maths first, and FM typically requires an actual/predicted A in Maths. So Maths + Further Maths in one year from a no-calculus base is not realistic; providers decline or steer against it.
The realistic fast-track plan is therefore one intensive year of A-level Maths (plus Physics / Computer Science, and maybe an AS or part of Further Maths) — not two full maths A-levels in twelve months. Implication:
- Single A-level Maths in a year already unlocks TU Delft (CSE needs Maths only) and much of the UK.
- Maths + Further Maths — what Imperial, Warwick, Cambridge want — realistically needs 18 months or two years, or a strong existing base. A genuine 1-year Maths + FM is borderline.
Helpful: Maths and Further Maths are 100% written-exam (no coursework or practical endorsement), which makes them the easiest subjects to sit as a private or online candidate.
Option A — UK tutorial colleges (1-year / fast-track)¶
Specialist "CIFE" tutorial colleges (small classes, intensive, used to one-year and re-take students) fit accelerated A-levels far better than a mainstream school. Boarding also supplies the structure, predicted grade, and UCAS reference the online route lacks.

Best fits for an accelerated maths student: Rochester IC, MPW, CATS Cambridge, Ashbourne, or Cambridge Tutors College's January 18-month route. OIC and d'Overbroeck's are excellent but really two-year operations.
Option B — Online / home A-levels¶
Study from home; sit exams as a private candidate at an approved centre. An order of magnitude cheaper — but no built-in structure or peer group, and you arrange exams yourself.

Almost no online provider hosts exams — you register as a private candidate at an approved centre and pay the centre directly (CloudLearn and, optionally, Oxbridge Home Learning help arrange this). Fast-track Further Maths online from a weak base is high-risk (~500 self-study hours on top of Maths); a hybrid — an online course plus a private STEP/FM tutor — is far more credible than pure self-study.
Option C — Private tutor + private candidate¶
Tutored/self-study, sitting as a private candidate. Use the JCQ centre-finder for centres that accept private candidates; boards Edexcel / AQA / OCR all offer Maths/FM privately. Entry deadlines are ~Jan/Feb for the summer (May/June) series. Costs: centre fees ~£150–350+/subject; tutoring ~£40–80+/hr (STEP specialists higher). Most flexible and pairs well with STEP/MAT prep — but there's no predicted-grade or UCAS-reference infrastructure by default, which matters for 2027 applications. Best combined with a named online provider (for the reference/predicted grade) plus a tutor for FM/STEP.
The "do-nothing year" caveat (foundations vary)¶
Many international foundation years are academically weak — paid bridges, not real years of development. UCL UPC and Warwick IFP are the reported exceptions (genuine A-level-equivalent maths under faculty supervision). So A-levels aren't merely "an alternative": for continental + Imperial-direct they're the better qualification; for UK-only destinations they're a harder, often pricier path than a strong foundation.
Olympiads & credentials — useful, but secondary¶
The UKMT senior pathway across 2026/27: Senior Mathematical Challenge (~early Oct) → BMO1 (~mid/late Nov, mostly by SMC score) → BMO2 (~late Jan). (2026/27 dates not yet published — projected from the stable pattern.) A private candidate needs a school/centre to enter the SMC.
Candidly: for selective maths departments the decisive credentials are, in order — (1) top grades + Further Maths; (2) the admissions tests — TMUA (now required for Cambridge Maths 2027 entry and by Imperial; accepted by Warwick), STEP (Cambridge), MAT (Oxford); and only then (3) Olympiads (SMC/BMO), a genuine but supplementary signal, not a gate (strong applicants are admitted with no BMO results). Front-load TMUA/STEP preparation over chasing Olympiad qualifications; enter the SMC if a centre can (it's cheap and good training), but don't let it displace test prep.
Bottom line for a maths-gap profile¶
- Most realistic structure: one intensive year of A-level Maths (+ Physics/CS, maybe partial/AS Further Maths) — not two full maths A-levels in twelve months. That already opens TU Delft + much of the UK; full Maths + FM (Imperial/Warwick/Cambridge) realistically needs 18 months or two years.
- Delivery — given the structure/readiness question: a fast-track tutorial college (Rochester IC, MPW, CATS Cambridge, Ashbourne, or CTC's January route) is likely the better fit than self-directed online — it supplies structure, a predicted grade, and a UCAS reference. Online + a private tutor wins only if cost/flexibility dominate and self-discipline is reliable.
- Cost reality: a boarding tutorial college runs ~£40–55k for the year — comparable to or above a foundation — while online can be single-figure thousands. You're partly paying for structure.
- Whichever route: register exams by Jan/Feb 2027 for the summer series, apply for 2027 entry on predicted grades, and prioritise TMUA/STEP preparation.
