UCL UPC (UPCSE) — Application Process

Programme name and strand

  • UCL UPC = University Preparatory Certificate. Run in-house by UCL's Centre for Languages and International Education (CLIE) since 1996.
  • UPCSE = Science & Engineering strand. The path for math / stats / physics / engineering / CS-family BScs.
  • One academic year, ~late September 2026 → June 2027. Bloomsbury campus.

Step-by-step process

  1. Gather documents (some take weeks — start in parallel).
  2. Apostilled attestat + certified translation.
  3. Academic reference from school (see the documents section below).
  4. IELTS UKVI Academic score (post-September 2024, UKVI centre).
  5. Passport scan.
  6. Personal statement (500 words — see below).

  7. Passport-style photo (for some forms).

  8. Submit online application via UCL CLIE's UPC portal (not UCAS — UCL runs its own system).

  9. Upload documents as PNG or JPEG (per UCL spec).

  10. Write personal statement within the form.

  11. Pay £130 application fee via UCL Online Store after submission.

  12. Wait for entrance-tests invitation. UCL admissions contacts you within "a few days, up to 10 working days" during busy periods.

  13. Take the entrance test. UPCSE has a subject-specific written test (mathematics core).

  14. Attend the interview.

  15. UPCSE format: questions about your studies, experiences, why this degree, your personal statement, and possible subject-specific challenges.

  16. Online; strict rule: "you agree that you will not allow anyone to be present during the interview, nor will you use prompts or technological assistance."

  17. Receive offer — UCL informs you within a few days of interview (or by a stated date).

  18. Accept offer + pay £2,750 deposit within 2 weeks. (Lost if you later withdraw voluntarily — see deposit logic below.)

  19. Pay remaining tuition by 30 June 2026.

  20. Apply for accommodation separately. The 25 March accommodation deadline has passed, so plan for residual UCL halls / Intercollegiate / private.

  21. Apply for UK Student Visa once CAS is issued (~April for early-decided students; later for later-decided).

Personal statement — required, structured

500 words maximum. Must cover, in this order:

  1. Why the applicant wants the degree and which aspects interest them most.
  2. Academic and non-academic experiences that shaped that interest.
  3. How the applicant will fit into UPC and what challenges they anticipate.
  4. Their "single proudest achievement."

Do not include: - Long lists of extracurricular activities. - Detailed school grade tables. - CV-style content (unless mature applicant with professional background).

AI rule (verbatim from UCL): "only use generative AI tools, if at all, either to help with spelling and grammar."

So the applicant writes it themselves. Light grammar polish is allowed.

Entrance test (UPCSE) — what to expect

  • Subject-specific written test, mathematics core.
  • Tests prior school math (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, functions) plus basic problem-solving.
  • Not calculus-heavy at entry — UCL accepts no-calculus background; calculus is taught in the year.
  • Format details (online vs in-person, duration) are sent with the invitation.

Interview — what to expect

  • Online, one-on-one.
  • 20-30 minutes typical.
  • Questions probe: motivation, fit, self-awareness about challenges, ability to discuss own personal statement, subject curiosity.
  • Strict integrity rules — no one else present, no notes, no AI assistance.

Deposit logic (CRITICAL — read carefully)

  1. Application fee £130 — non-refundable in all cases.
  2. Offer received — no deposit yet. Decline freely; only application fee is lost.
  3. Accept offer + pay £2,750 deposit within 2 weeks.
  4. Deposit credits toward tuition if you proceed.
  5. Withdraw voluntarily after paying deposit → DEPOSIT IS LOST. Not refunded.
  6. Visa refusal with documentation → most of deposit refunded (small admin fee retained).
  7. Serious illness / family emergency with documentation → case-by-case; not guaranteed.

Strategic implication when also applying to Warwick IFP: - Applying to both costs £205 in application fees up front (£130 UCL + £75 Warwick). - Both offers can be held without deposit payment. - Each offer has its own ~2-week deposit deadline. - Paying both deposits forfeits one of them when you choose (~£2,000–2,750 lost). - Practical play: get both offers → compare → pay deposit at ONE only → decline the other before its deposit deadline.

So if the application is submitted in early June 2026, an offer-by-early-July is realistic.

Critical near-term sequencing

  • This week: book IELTS UKVI Academic, start apostille + translation pipeline, request school academic reference.
  • Within 2 weeks: draft personal statement (applicant writes).
  • Within 3 weeks: submit application even if IELTS score is not yet back — score can usually be updated post-submission. Capacity-based closure is the real risk, not the 8 Jul date.

1-2. Attestat: apostille + certified translation

What's needed

UCL requires "a certified and translated copy of your school transcripts stamped by an authorised translator." This is two layers:

  1. Apostille — legalises the original Russian attestat for international use under the Hague Convention. Issued by the Russian Ministry of Education (or regional equivalent). Applied to the original Russian-language attestat.
  2. Certified translation — English translation by a sworn / authorised / registered translator, with their stamp and signature.

Where to do the certified translation (Europe-based options)

Continental EU residency (Schengen). Three viable pipelines:

Option A — Poland (recommended for convenience): - Use a Polish sworn translator (tłumacz przysięgły). These translators are state-certified and recognised internationally including by UK universities. - Find via the Polish Ministry of Justice register: lista.ms.gov.pl. Search for Russian → English translators (some do both directions; others Russian → Polish + Polish → English in a two-step process). - Cost: roughly PLN 50-100 per standard page (~€11-23/page). Attestat is usually 2-4 pages → ~PLN 200-400 total (~€45-90). - Turnaround: 3-10 working days typical; expedited possible. - Output: bilingual document with translator's stamp and signature.

Option B — Russia (cleanest legalisation chain): - Translate via a Russian notary-affiliated translation bureau. - The translator's signature is then notarised, and the notary's signature can be apostilled. - This produces a fully apostilled translation alongside the apostilled original. - Useful if the apostille is being obtained in Russia anyway — bundle both in one trip / one agent. - Cost: ~RUB 3,000-8,000 (~€30-80).

Option C — UK (after arrival or in advance): - Use a UK translator registered with ITI (Institute of Translation & Interpreting) or CIOL (Chartered Institute of Linguists). - More expensive: typically £40-80 per page. - Useful only if UK contacts are available or wants to do it on arrival.

Recommendation: Option A (Poland sworn translator) for applicants residing in or near Poland — quickest, recognised by UCL, and the standard route for non-UK EU residents. Otherwise Option B (Russia) if the apostille is being done there anyway.

Verify with UCL admissions

Open question: does UCL require the translator's seal to be apostilled as well, or is the sworn translator's stamp sufficient on its own? UCL's wording "stamped by an authorised translator" suggests the stamp alone suffices, but confirm via upc@ucl.ac.uk.

3. Academic reference

UCL's requirement (verbatim)

"A reference from an education professional who knows your academic work."

What this means in practice

  • One letter is required. Not multiple.
  • From whom: a teacher, head teacher, principal, class supervisor, or other "education professional" who has direct knowledge of the applicant's academic work. Math teacher is ideal given the chosen subject.
  • Format: typed letter, ~1 page (some go to 2). On school letterhead is ideal but not strictly required. Signed, dated, with contact details.
  • Language: English preferred. If written in Russian, include certified translation (same translator pipeline as the attestat).
  • Content expected:
  • How long and in what capacity the referee has known the applicant.
  • Assessment of academic ability — particularly in mathematics.
  • Work ethic, behaviour, intellectual curiosity, suitability for university study.
  • Specific examples / anecdotes are stronger than generic statements.
  • A clear positive recommendation for UCL UPC.
  • Submission: uploaded as PDF/scan with the application. Some universities prefer references sent directly by the referee; UCL UPC accepts candidate upload.

Note on non-issuing schools

If the school that issued a student's school-leaving certificate is not the same as where the substantive teaching happened (e.g. final-year transfer to an exam-only or online school), UCL accepts an academic reference from the substantive teaching school rather than the issuing one. The criterion is "an education professional who knows your academic work," not "from the school that issued the certificate."

One reference or two?

UCL requires only one academic reference. Two can be appropriate when a student has a non-standard education history (e.g. mid-year transfers, brief enrolments) and a single referee can't credibly cover the whole picture. Practical limit: don't submit more than two; quality > quantity.

4. IELTS UKVI Academic

  • Must be UKVI Academic, not generic IELTS. Test must be at a UKVI-approved centre.
  • Test date must be after 1 September 2024 to be valid for 2026 entry.
  • Score requirements depend on the target UCL degree's English level — UPCSE entry typically Level 1 (6.0 overall + 5.5 in three components + 5.0 in fourth), with STEM degrees later requiring Level 2 or 3 (6.5+).
  • Booking: 4-6 weeks typical from booking to score release.
  • Where to test: any UKVI test centre (cross-border travel is normal — Warsaw, Krakow, Berlin, etc. are all options for Central / Eastern European applicants).

5. Personal statement

  • 500 words max.
  • Four-part structure (see the application-process section above for verbatim prompts).
  • The applicant writes it themselves; AI allowed only for spelling/grammar.
  • A non-standard education history (gap year, programme switch, etc.) is best addressed briefly under prompt 2 ("experiences shaping your interest") rather than dwelt on.

6-7. Passport scan and photo

  • Standard requirements; nothing unusual.
  • Passport must be valid through the duration of study + 6 months.
  • Photo: digital, passport-style, neutral background.

8. Portfolio — not applicable

  • Required only for UCL Architecture, Media BA, Art and Technology BA applicants.
  • UPCSE / mathematics route does not require this.

UCL does not have a formal "additional information" field, but an applicant with a non-standard education history (gap year, programme switch, mid-cycle move) can:

  • Address it inside the personal statement (briefly, ~50-80 words, under prompt 2 — "experiences shaping your interest").
  • Have the academic reference acknowledge it briefly.
  • Be ready to discuss it in the interview directly and without defensiveness.

  1. Translation legalisation depth — Is a Polish sworn translator's (tłumacz przysięgły) stamp on the English translation sufficient, or does the translator's signature itself also need to be apostilled?

  7. Number of references — UCL specifies one. Would supplying a second (e.g., math teacher + headmaster) strengthen the application, or be seen as overkill?

  8. Reference language — Will UCL accept a reference written in Russian with a sworn English translation, or do they require the referee to write in English originally? Some Russian teachers cannot write English fluently.

Education-history framing

  1. Non-standard background framing — UCL has no formal "additional information" field. For applicants with gap years, programme switches, or other off-cycle history, where exactly should that context be addressed?
  2. Default plan: brief mention in personal statement (prompt 2: "experiences shaping your interest"), and again in the interview if asked.

  3. Confirm there's no separate "explain non-standard background" supplementary letter expected.

  4. Partial-attendance documentation — Where an applicant attended but did not complete a previous post-school programme, is a partial-attendance certificate / transcript useful to obtain even if not formally submitted with the application?

  5. Likely useful to have on hand for the interview.

Admissions / progression

  1. Confirm 2026/27 tuition figure — Project files have ~£28,000 as a ballpark; the official 2026/27 figure is not yet confirmed verbatim from a UCL source.

  2. STEP requirement, current cycle — Is STEP still mandatory for UCL BSc Mathematics progression from UPC in 2027 entry, or only for top applicants? Are there UPCSE-internal alternatives (very high pure math grade)?

  3. Mathematics with Statistical Science vs Mathematics — Same progression bar from UPC, or different? Does Statistical Science avoid the STEP requirement?

  4. UPCSE entrance test — Format details (online/in-person, duration, calculator policy, exact syllabus). Not publicly listed in detail; provided with invitation but useful to know in advance for prep.

Logistics

  1. Accommodation — The 25 Mar 2026 accommodation deadline passed before this research. What residual UCL halls are still available for late applicants? What is the realistic fallback (Intercollegiate Halls, private student housing) and what should be booked first?

  2. Visa timeline for Russian passport in 2026 — current UK Student Visa processing times for Russian-citizen applicants (typical route via the UK Visa Application Centre in their country of residence). 6-8 weeks ballpark, but worth verifying via VFS.

Strategy

  1. Hold-both-offers timing — If both UCL and Warwick make offers within similar windows, optimal sequencing of submissions to maximise the window of comparison before a deposit must be committed.
