The headline

The English-taught "pick your own subjects" UvA programme is Amsterdam University College — an honours Liberal Arts and Sciences bachelor jointly run by UvA + VU Amsterdam.1

Verdict for a pure-math priority: AUC is NOT a serious math bachelor. A student can build a quant-leaning AUC degree, but cannot build the equivalent of a dedicated Mathematics BSc. The structural ceiling is hard.

Why it's not a real math bachelor

  • Only 11 courses (66 ECTS) inside the Sciences major vs. ~180 ECTS of mathematics in a dedicated Wiskunde BSc.
  • No published advanced pure-math sequence (Analysis 2/3, Abstract Algebra, Topology, Measure Theory, Functional Analysis).
  • UvA's own Mathematics MSc treats AUC Sciences graduates as math-deficient and mandates an additional 30 EC bridge minor before admission to the master's.2 Verbatim from the official UvA Mathematical Themes minor page:

"De minor kan ook gebruikt worden door FNWI-, AUC- en Econometrie-studenten om te voldoen aan de ingangseisen voor de Master Mathematics."

In plain English: AUC's own Sciences-Math track is not sufficient for UvA's MSc Mathematics without an extra 30 ECTS minor. This is the cleanest institutional verdict possible.

What AUC actually is — accurately

  • Honours liberal arts and sciences bachelor, 3 years, 180 ECTS, English-taught.
  • BSc for Sciences major, BA for Social Sciences or Humanities.
  • 8 Sciences tracks: Mathematics, Physics, Information, Chemistry, Biology, Biomedical, Health, Earth & Environmental.
  • ~300 admits/year; ~20% acceptance rate (unofficial estimate); small classes (max 25); residential campus; 80% international.3
  • Top student-satisfaction scores in Dutch national surveys (4.3/5 in 2015 Nationale Studentenquête).3

Math courses available

Confirmed via AUC faculty pages:

  • Academic Core (compulsory): Calculus (Michael McAssey), Linear Algebra (Yurii Khomskii), Logic, Statistics for Sciences, Advanced Research Methods and Statistics.
  • Sciences major math track: 100-level introductions, 200-level intermediate, 300-level advanced. Specific pure-math 300-level courses (Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Topology) are NOT advertised on the public pages and did not surface in any aggregated source.
  • Effective curriculum a math-focused AUC student can build: Calc + LA + Statistics + Probability + a handful of applied/computational electives. Roughly equivalent to first 1.5 years of a real math BSc.

Practitioner critique

Recurring critical voice from a student review on EduOpinions:

"The freedom to build your own curriculum comes with the responsibility to make smart choices, and some students can get lost and end up without a clear major, which might make Master's admissions difficult."4

"If you want to pursue a Master's in psychology, medicine, or law, you'll likely need to complete a pre-master semester afterward because the interdisciplinary program doesn't allow sufficient specialized credits."4

"The curriculum prioritizes breadth across disciplines rather than deep specialization within a single field."4

This is the recurring critique. Applies to math the same way it applies to psychology / law / medicine.

Graduate outcomes

AUC's own 2023 alumni database (n=1,930):

  • 85% pursued or completed a graduate degree.
  • Top abroad destinations: UCL, Oxford, KCL, LSE, Sciences Po, Cambridge, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Uppsala, ETH Zürich.5
  • Pure Mathematics is NOT among the commonly-listed master's destinations. Common: international relations, law, neuroscience, environmental sciences, economics, physics, business, psychology, CS.
  • Path to a Math MSc exists but requires the 30 EC bridge minor + exceptional grades.

Entry requirements

  • Diploma: VWO-equivalent. Russian attestat alone is not standard VWO equivalent — typically needs attestat + one year of university study OR a foundation year. A completed UK foundation year would clear this.
  • English: IELTS 7.0 overall, 6.5 in each band (minimum).
  • Math (for Sciences major): VWO Wiskunde B 7+, IB AA HL 5+, or OMPT-B with 75% (two attempts allowed). No OMPT-D for AUC Sciences.
  • Motivation letter ("personal study plan") + academic recommendation.
  • Possible interview for highly-ranked candidates.
  • Application deadlines: early-bird 1 Dec, regular 1 Feb, late 1 May. OMPT by 1 July.

Cost 2026/27

Item Amount
Non-EU tuition €20,430 / year
One-time campus fee €675
Mandatory on-campus housing ~€4,400 / year
Living / books / insurance ~€6,000 / year
All-in non-EU ~€31,000 – €34,000 / year

Other UvA English-taught options for quants

  • UvA BSc Wiskunde (Mathematics) — confirmed Dutch-only.
  • UvA BSc Econometrics & Data ScienceEnglish track exists, heavily quantitative, structured (not "free choice"). IELTS 6.5 minimum. Deadline 1 May 2026 / 1 April with visa.
  • UvA BSc Actuarial Science — English track, shares first two years with Econometrics.

If "English-taught quant-serious UvA" is the brief, Econometrics & Data Science or Actuarial Science are stronger fits than AUC.

When AUC makes sense

  • For a math-curious but not math-monomaniacal student.
  • For someone wanting a small-class, residential, internationally diverse honours environment.
  • For someone planning a flexible quantitative MSc path (data science, computational science, mathematical physics) rather than pure math.

When AUC does NOT make sense

  • For pure-math depth at the level of Warwick / Edinburgh / Polytechnique.
  • For an aspiring research mathematician — the 30 EC bridge minor + AUC's lack of advanced pure sequence is a real obstacle.
  • For someone whose primary goal is intellectual depth in mathematics specifically.
